|
|
A basic course outline is as follows: The Search & Rescue Team Leader (SARTL) is responsible for the safety of their search team and also for carrying out the mission assigned by the search management team. As such, it is important to ensure that individuals
who fill the role of SARTL are competent, both through training and experience. The objective of the Search Team Leader Course is to develop the skills necessary to safely travel and lead search teams in non-technical mountainous and wilderness terrain while
effectively completing the assigned mission. This course covers the fundamentals of outdoor leadership, risk management, route selection, navigation, emergency response, group care and dynamics, helicopter safety, and a review of search best practices in a
field environment. The 3 day outdoor portion provides an opportunity for each candidate to demonstrate their ability to lead a group through difficult terrain safely. There is a strong emphasis on route finding, terrain evaluation and navigation, under the
guidance of experienced backcountry Search Managers and Guides.
